What does your art bring to you?
From photography to dance, music, and painting, everything is a form of art. Creating something without words is something that definitely speaks to people. Being able to communicate without words is quite interesting and I am loving it. I love the hidden messages behind the colors and their symbolism. I love feminism, curves, lines, shapes, nature, and culture. Art has always played an important part in my life from a very young age. I’ve always been connected to it in one way or another and I will always be. It became my passion. Art is valuable to me because it makes me feel the beauty of freedom, it opens the heart, feeds the mind, and offers me an easy short-cut way of escape from reality. Art makes me feel, tout simplement 🙂
What artwork would you like to see in real life?
Frida Kahlo’s artworks, all of them! But if I had to choose only one, I’d say Self Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird. I love Frida and this artwork particularly, with all the details and messages it conveys. She described her paintings as “the sincerest and real thing that I could do in order to express what I felt inside and outside of myself”. I feel the same about art. Painting and drawing are such beautiful ways of expressing our feelings. This great artist is such an inspiration, a strong woman that I admire for so many reasons. Her artworks are unique, and she is such a significant painter, feminist icon, and a pioneer of Latin American culture. She shared the limelight with the flora and fauna of Mexico. Culture had an important place in her life.
One of my dreams would be to visit the Blue House opened in 1958 as the Museum of Frida Kahlo, dedicated to the artist whose remarkable personality apparently lives on within its wall.
What are your inspirations?
My country, history, legends and stories, cultures, people, movies, art, life, colors and their symbolism, family, womanhood, and feminism. Nature, fauna and flora also, we are so lucky to have such a beautiful island, I am thinking of our beautiful birds that I love to paint, the Mauritian Kestrel, the Pink Pigeon (my favorite one), the Echo Parakeet, this vibrant bird who is the last remaining species of the Mascarene island parrots. If only we could take better care of these precious species, as many of these are now threatened with extinction because of human activities. Some have already become extinct, most famously the dodo which disappeared in the 17th century and which I often like to revive through my artworks too. Birds are definitely a great source of inspiration, but I also like to paint my Mauritian and tropical fauna and flora. I love nature. I am also very inspired and admire the work of some artists in particular such as Klimt, Kahlo, Gauguin, Matisse, Dali, Rodin, Stina Spangenberg, Kara Walker, Vaco, Nirveda Alleck…
What are your dreams?
Culture trips, travel to other countries, visit cave arts, Lascaux cave with my daughters. Eat pizzas in Italy with my mum, do huge paintings on huge walls. Eat cheesecakes in New York and visit cinema studios. Eat sushi in Japan. (Yes we love food). Backpacking in Madagascar and India with sisters and brother and take loads of beautiful photographs of people. Discover other cultures. Go to another Coldplay concert and this time I’ll bring Yann with me. Meet artists around the globe and work together on projects and exhibits in other countries.
Being a mother of two babies now, Sofia 3 and Léa 4years old, another dream would be to co-write and illustrate books for children. I absolutely love those colorful children’s books and illustrations. I am also thinking of a little 2D animation with my children’s drawings, to give life to one of their characters and see where it goes: a simple animation, or a story, maybe a book, or perhaps a toy or sculpture, as colorful as they paint them. Their drawings inspire me so much!
And the last one: do a mother and daughter exhibition one day.
